Biodynamic Gardener, Raphael Garden

Biodynamic Gardener, Raphael Garden (Fair Oaks, California)

Our current Biodynamic Gardener is retiring from RSC – and we are offering a rare and exciting opportunity to transition into an important leadership role.

Rudolf Steiner College is seeking a passionate and self-directed Biodynamic Gardener for Raphael Garden, a fully functional, Demeter-certified, biodynamic farm that supports year-round vegetables and seasonal fruit, as well as diverse plant and flower life. Our livestock are working animals that contribute to the increase in organic matter and regeneration of the soil, while beehives nestle under trees. A small greenhouse nurtures tender seedlings while vegetable crops line the slope overlooking the orchard. At the center of it all, flower beds encircle a small pond and a melodic flow-form.

Raphael Garden is located at the center of the 13-acre campus of Rudolf Steiner College, offering Waldorf teacher education, personal enrichment courses, and workshops. Meristem also shares the campus, a nonprofit organization helping young adults on the autism spectrum develop practical life skills, increase social capacity, and transition to work and independence. The college is adjacent to the American River Parkway with hours of hiking and biking trails nearby.

The new Biodynamic Gardener will have increasing responsibilities in preparation for a general transition to a leadership role, both in education as well as social enterprises. General responsibilities will be to direct staff and interns, education programs and events, oversee and perform land cultivation and production, and to manage infrastructure and equipment maintenance.

Specific Biodynamic Gardener responsibilities include:

  • Adult education and introducing biodynamics to the greater Sacramento community. The garden is used as a lab for biodynamic workshops. He/she will be instrumental in building community through festivals, ceremonies, and events as well as cottage industries.
  • Directing our internship program, which includes managing people, monitoring hours, preparing curriculum and interns for internal and external career opportunities. Half of the position includes teaching Meristem students, coordinating social enterprise activities on our campus such as medicinals, beauty care products, etc., and integrating Rudolf Steiner College and Meristem garden/farm activities.
  • Growing biodynamic food for our campus café, which features local, fresh, organic food.
  • Seed saving and practices, which supplies half of the garden with its own seed supply.
  • Program administration and financial management: tracking and analyzing data and fiscal management.
  • Being a visionary, having a sense of stewardship, looking at the land and seeing potential and then creatively manifesting that potential, while including stakeholders in the process.

Our ideal candidate will be energetic and creative with strong written and verbal communication skills, and possess outstanding leadership and adult educator skills with proficiency in the English language. It is preferred that the applicant has completed a Biodynamic internship.

This is a full-time, year round position that offers competitive pay. Housing is negotiable. For questions about the position, contact harald.hoven@steinercollege.edu.
